Construction Project Dashboard Excel: 7 KPIs Worth Tracking Every Week

A construction project dashboard should answer a few important questions quickly. It does not need dozens of charts. The best dashboards highlight what is open, late, blocked or commercially unresolved.

1. Open actions

Show the total number of live actions and how many are overdue. This gives an immediate view of whether the team is closing work faster than new actions are being raised.

2. Overdue actions

Overdue actions deserve their own KPI. A growing overdue count often signals a resourcing, ownership or decision-making problem before it becomes visible elsewhere.

3. Open snags

Track remaining defects and, where useful, the number overdue against target close-out dates. This becomes especially important near practical completion or handover.

4. Variations awaiting approval

Commercial changes can be operationally complete but financially unresolved. A dashboard should make outstanding approvals visible rather than leaving them buried in a register.

5. Programme activities at risk

Identify tasks or workstreams that are likely to miss planned dates. A simple RAG status can be enough if the criteria are used consistently.

6. Upcoming milestones

Show the next key dates that require preparation: deliveries, inspections, access dates, commissioning, client approvals or handover milestones.

7. Key client decisions

Projects often stall because information or approval is still required. A short list of decisions and required-by dates can be more useful than another chart.

Keep the dashboard linked to live data

Where possible, build KPIs from the underlying trackers rather than typing totals manually. That reduces administration and keeps the dashboard aligned with the actual project registers.

The Construction Project Manager Toolkit is designed around this approach, with a dashboard linked to day-to-day project controls.
